I had suggested to my friend Alan a while back that we could meet up for a coffee or lunch some day, me riding out as training and him meeting me on his motorbike. This weekend he called me on that, suggesting the Glen Cafe at St, Margaret’s Loch. This meant an early start for me and despite the rain and wind I headed out.
As I passed Penicuik the weather got worse and as I headed towards Peebles considered cutting the run short and suggest we meet there instead. However, I determined that I should keep going and forced my way onwards. The run down the hill then along St. Margaret’s Loch was all into the wind, so strong was it that I couldn’t stop pedalling, even on the downhill section. It took me quite a bit longer to reach the cafe than I had anticipated, Alan having a couple off coffees while he waited for me.
Multiple coffees for myself and some toasties for lunch, then I headed out for the return journey. Reaching Edinburgh in time to do a chore I had to do, I realised that I had done 144km, so set out again to do another 16km or so to reach the magical 160km, or 100 miles on old money.
The ligt was starting to get bad along with the threatening weather, so completing my 100 miles I returned home and treated myself to a nice curry for dinner as a reward for a good day. The best aspect of the whole day however was that at the end of it I still felt really strong and had it not been for the worsening conditions I knew that I could easily have continued.
