May. The last full month before the tour. So much to do, so little time. At least that was how I was feeling for much of the month. The month started off with a very helpful discussion on the phone with Phil, our lead cyclist. I was very appreciative of the time he gave me as he was just back from leading another event and was out on the route recce for our tour. More than that I was also appreciative of the manner in which he dealt with the situation. I knew my training hadn’t been as good as it really needed to be and valued Phil’s opinion. Unfortunately Phil shared my concerns, though fortunately for me he wasn’t being judgemental of me and just pointed out the realities of my situation and gave me some advice and things to think about.
This was all proving very difficult for me to get my head around, but fortunately Phil’s advice, and many words of encouragement from other riders and sponsors reaffirmed my desire to try the full route. Sure, I know that at some point I might fail in my challenge, but as long as I have given it my best shot I will be happy with myself. I couldn’t face giving up before I’d even started. I am aware that I have to be really honest with myself while out on the tour so as not to put anyone else in difficulties.
I also just have to ride at my ability and not try to keep up with the much better riders. That was one of the best pieces of advice I was given at the Edinburgh training weekend. This was the final of three training weekends organised by Sarah and Tracey and I was disappointed that this was the only one I could make. I was very grateful to all the encouragement and advice that came my way, particularly from John, Neil and Marianne. It seems we have a really good bunch of people on the tour and I look forward to spending time with them in France.
By the end of the month the nerves were starting to get to me. I was getting progressively more worried about the whole thing. The excitement of undertaking this challenge that I have wanted to do for so many years was beginning to disappear. I know this is just nerves, but at the moment I just want it to be over and have made it all the way through France with some nice memories of the tour.
